  1. Avid reader

As a descendent of both Isaac Ross and Wades, I grew up with this story but never had the answers to many of my questions, especially those concerning the freed slaves who went to Liberia. Huffman has done an outstanding job of filling in many of my “historical blanks!”

  2. Melinda Kent

This book has shown that history as we have come to know it here in the US ,has some truths but all the details are missing. It has opened my eyes on how little white and black Americans really know fully the African story from all sides. We must at times throw out completely what has been passed down or taught when there is nothing to substantiate the narrative. The Ross family and others like it , I hope will be told so that we can learn not only from the past but help us understand that the slaves history is our history as Americans. In that ,we learn to see each other as intertwined individuals not separate from another.

I now live in this part of Mississippi and was very familiar with all the places around Port Gibson and Jefferson County. This book has filled in so many blanks and enriched my knowledge of the area. I wasn’t able to put it down. I am reading it for the second time now. I love southern writers! so easy to read yet still rich in detail!

  6. KEVIN HADDAD

LOVED this book. The author has a unique way of storytelling that really drew me in.If you enjoy the history of Liberia past and more recent, you’ll enjoy this book!

  7. PT Sr.

Outstanding historical perspective of one man’s ownership of slaves in Mississippi and his intent to free them so that they could emigrate to Liberia. One greedy member of his family took legal action to discredit the Will. The migration to Liberia was not well planned and filled with significant issues threatening the survival of the immigrants. Just an awesome story!

  8. Mari Lynne Earls

book as advertised, history is fascinating and illuminates present Liberian news. Recommend this seller and the book.

  9. Charles Borum

I am from Natchez Mississippi and I found the information in this book very very interesting. Prospect Hill plantation and Jefferson Co is just up the road from me. I love history and the writer really brought the history alive with its connection to the present.

Great book! While researching my family history and information on my great grand father Rev. William Ross, I came across this book and was blown away. Feels good to know my history was not lost!!!!
