What is Lorem Ipsum?

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.

Where does it come from?

Contrary to popular belief, Lorem Ipsum is not simply random text. It has roots in a piece of classical Latin literature from 45 BC, making it over 2000 years old. Richard McClintock, a Latin professor at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, looked up one of the more obscure Latin words, consectetur, from a Lorem Ipsum passage, and going through the cites of the word in classical literature, discovered the undoubtable source. Lorem Ipsum comes from sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of “de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum” (The Extremes of Good and Evil) by Cicero, written in 45 BC. This book is a treatise on the theory of ethics, very popular during the Renaissance. The first line of Lorem Ipsum, “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet..”, comes from a line in section 1.10.32.

The standard chunk of Lorem Ipsum used since the 1500s is reproduced below for those interested. Sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 from “de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum” by Cicero are also reproduced in their exact original form, accompanied by English versions from the 1914 translation by H. Rackham.

Where can I get some?

There are many variations of passages of Lorem Ipsum available, but the majority have suffered alteration in some form, by injected humour, or randomised words which don’t look even slightly believable. If you are going to use a passage of Lorem Ipsum, you need to be sure there isn’t anything embarrassing hidden in the middle of text. All the Lorem Ipsum generators on the Internet tend to repeat predefined chunks as necessary, making this the first true generator on the Internet. It uses a dictionary of over 200 Latin words, combined with a handful of model sentence structures, to generate Lorem Ipsum which looks reasonable. The generated Lorem Ipsum is therefore always free from repetition, injected humour, or non-characteristic words etc.

This is a fantastic update to what he has consistently taught, an excellent primer if you’re just starting out, and a way to deepen your knowledge if you’re more advanced.His message of treating people like real human beings rather than numbers on a list, and of earning trust over the long-term resonates through the book. It also has aspects that made me think anew – for example, how status and affiliation impact behaviour, and how to cultivate permission in a saturated media environment where trust is at an all-time low.Highly recommended.

    I am a fan of Seth Godin and have read all his books. This is marketing is, in my opinion, one of the best!Seth brings up the things we all think we know and question them. And he raises the points we should consider when creating, selling and engaging.I don’t want to spoil the joy of reading this book with too much information. What I can say for sure is that I highlighted most of it. So much good stuff!

    Ce livre fait ce que son titre annonce : il explique c’est qu’est réellement le marketing. Et croyez-moi, vous ne savez pas réellement de que c’est tant que vous ne l’avez pas lu.Livre facile à lire, et incroyablement inspirant.

    If you are looking for a marketing methodology where you can implement it and start cranking the handle, this isn’t it. Seth provides a long list of thoughts about Marketing in the modern world. “Obviously” he has to cater for B2C and B2B as well as all of the variants in between. He does focus in on the death of interruption marketing and how companies now need to build relationships and have conversations with clients. He also takes into account the new world order of the internet, mobile and social, where buyers are empowered to make their own purchase decisions by the content you shared on the internet. Or, of course, not finding your content so you not being shortlisted. That’s the choice he points out today, be insightful, or funny or educational or be ignored.

    The Man did it again. I have been reading Seth Blog since the early autumn 2014 and I can safely say, that I am still looking for his email in my email box every morning around 10 am. Having done the altMBA programme back in July 2017, The Bootstrapper workshop in 2018, read most of his books (some a couple of time like The Dip / The Linchpin and Graceful) I was really looking forward to “This Is Marketing”. I read the book in two days and still listen to it now whilst doing The Marketing Seminar online.I am not learning something new every day, it does help making this concept part of my daily work and be more remarkable, unique and focused on my clients and the important things in life. Go for it and dice!
